Enhancing your vocabulary

In English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, students frequently ask their teachers, “How can I enhance my vocabulary?”. The answer is simple: read more in English!

Regrettably, reading has become a neglected pastime globally, primarily due to the fast-paced lifestyle and the proliferation of modern technology. In contrast to reading, people prefer to watch movies on Netflix and other streaming platforms.

The difference in word placement, argumentative skills, and written development is easily noticeable even in any language for those who have the habit of reading regularly. Reading not only enhances vocabulary and argumentative skills but also provides several benefits to the brain and personality. Thus, making reading a regular habit can positively impact various aspects of an individual’s life, irrespective of the language.

Reading enhances brain activity.

Reading stimulates various areas of the brain, including comprehension, analytical skills, memory, imagination, and creativity. As a neurobiological process, reading strengthens the brain muscles, helping slow cognitive decline and decreasing the speed at which memory fades. This has been widely reported by science, making reading an essential activity for maintaining cognitive health.

It helps with self-awareness.

Books offer both an escape and an adventure. They provide an opportunity to explore various perspectives, learn about diverse cultures, events, and individuals, and adopt thought processes that can enhance or transform one’s personality. Having a broad range of knowledge also makes an individual more engaging, allowing them to connect with people from different backgrounds and experiences based on shared information.

Therefore, when learning a language, it is advisable to adopt and cultivate the habit of reading. Start with simpler books, even children’s books, that align with your current proficiency level. Utilize different mediums like physical books, kindles, or even computer screens to read. The style of the book is not as important as the benefits you can derive from this practice. Hence, it is vital to acknowledge that reading is a healthy habit that can significantly improve your language skills.
