PROFICIENCY EXAMS

In contemporary society, the significance of learning English is well-understood. However, many people may not be aware of the various proficiency tests that assess an individual’s competence in the English language. These assessments follow standardized criteria to evaluate reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension skills in English. By measuring an individual’s proficiency, they determine the person’s level of ability, ranging from beginner to advanced. These tests are intended for individuals who need to demonstrate their level of familiarity with the language, whether for professional or academic purposes. These assessments are used to evaluate candidates’ language skills and determine their placement in foreign educational institutions or the job market.

There are several proficiency tests in the market and it is worth understanding a little more about the main ones:

TOEFL

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is one of the most well-known assessments worldwide. It was created in 1964 by ETS, a nonprofit institution in the United States dedicated to educational research and exams. The main objective of this test is certification for admission to foreign universities, such as the University of Ottawa in Canada or Yale in the United States.

IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is among the top ones in the world. There are two versions of the test: Academic, for those who want to study abroad; and General Training, which focuses on the job market and immigration scenarios. It is an international and official English proficiency exam, organized by the British Council, Cambridge English Language Assessment, and IDP Australia. Required of foreign students at universities in countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand, and even in the United States, this exam stands out for its evaluation methods, rigorous application, and accurate results.

TOEIC

The Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) was also developed by ETS, the same institution that created the TOEFL exam. However, while the TOEFL measures academic communication skills, the TOEIC test measures proficiency relevant to the global workplace.

PTE

PTE Academic is one of the proficiency exams offered by Pearson Language Tests, developed and administered by the British multinational Pearson PLC. Its main difference is that it offers tests for different stages of life, from children and teenagers to adults seeking a career in multinational companies or academic opportunities in foreign universities.

Cambridge Exams

The Cambridge English Tests – or Cambridge Exams – are a set of English language certifications. Each of them presents a different type of test and a specific certificate, which has lifelong validity. There are 6 different tests that assess a level of language proficiency, so it is necessary to choose which test is most suitable for your current level of English. They are separated by level of language proficiency and are based on the CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), on a scale of six, from A1 for beginners to C2 for those who master a language. They are indicated for those who seek admission to universities in the United Kingdom.

Choosing the appropriate English proficiency test is dependent on the individual’s objectives. For instance, the school or government program to which one is applying will indicate the acceptable test, thereby narrowing down the options. However, for individuals taking the test for reasons such as obtaining a certification for their resume, they may consider several factors when choosing a test, such as cost, availability at testing centers in their city, or the test’s popularity in their country. It is essential to note that, while standardized English proficiency tests may appear similar, each has unique features. Thus, it is crucial to understand the distinguishing characteristics of each test to determine which one aligns with one’s objectives.
